Maqui berry has been shown to help activate AMPK a central regulator of energy balance and metabolism. Activation of AMPK has been shown to help with appetite control, blood sugar support, lipid levels, reduction of inflammation and repair of damaged tissue. This is why Dr. Sears calls maqui the best of the best when it comes to polyphenols.

Benefits of MaquiRx:
  • Maqui Berry is one of the richest polyphenol sources known, having three times more antioxidants than blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries.
  • Maqui berries have the highest concentration of a subclass of polyphenols called delphinidins, which can enter the blood more easily than other polyphenols, thus supporting activation of AMPK.
  • Maqui berry extract has been clinically shown to support improved blood sugar levels and reduced oxidative stress.
  • Source of anti-oxidants to help minimize free radical formation and anti-aging.
  • Supplies 120 mg of polyphenols per serving.
  • Helps support a healthy gut.
  • Free of sugar commonly found in fruits.
  • Third party tested for purity.
  • Easy to swallow vegetarian capsule.

Suggested Use: Take one (1) capsule daily with a meal for optimal absorption. 30 servings per bottle.

What are Polyphenols?

Polyphenols are nutrients found in plants that are responsible for their health-promoting properties. The more colorful the plant, generally the higher the polyphenol content. This is why fruits, especially berries, and vegetables are good sources of polyphenols.

Polyphenols offer plants protection against the sun’s radiation and help defend against disease. They protect us in a similar way by acting as antioxidants to help combat inflammation and aid in improving immunity through their activation of key genes. The antioxidant capacity of polyphenols is 3x greater than those found in traditional antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E.

Polyphenols Are…

Polyphenols give fruits and vegetables their bright colors. Until recently, little was known about polyphenols. We now know they are powerful activators of genes. In particular, polyphenols can activate the genes necessary for the production of anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging enzymes.

You Need Polyphenols Because…

Polyphenols maintain a healthy gut by promoting an optimal microbial composition. Although polyphenols are not yet considered essential nutrients, you have to have adequate levels in the diet on a daily basis to continually activate the genes required for optimal health, especially for gut health.

Polyphenols Help You Eat Less by…

Polyphenols help support the enzymes that optimize metabolism so that you can promote higher energy levels.

Supplementing with Polyphenols is Important Because…

Polyphenol supplements can be concentrated to higher levels making it more likely for the body to get adequate levels on a daily basis to maintain optimal wellness.

    excellent product.

  2. Chad (verified owner)

I have taken Maqui RX and it seems to lower inflammation. I’ve also read a lot about a supplement called Pycnogenol. How do these two substances compare and does Maqui RX offer any advantages?

    • Dr. Sears Zone

Chad, Thank you for your comment and question. Dr. Sears’ MaquiRx is a polyphenol extract from the maqui berry that has a special class of polyphenols know as delphinidins that have a unique structure making them one of the few water soluble polyphenols that can be absorbed intact into the blood. In studies, these delphinidins have been shown to improve blood sugar levels and reduce the oxidative stress which is a major cause of unresolved inflammation. Pynogenol contains polyphenols sourced from French maritime pine bark but does not appear to contain delphinidins like those found in the MaquiRx. Thank You, Dr. Sears Zone

I’ve been using MaquiRx right from its introduction. As a supplement to a diet that includes plenty of fruit and lots of brightly coloured ( 🙂 )vegetables (and a daily fish meal), I believe that the combination of a daily MaquiRx capsule (and a couple of OmegaRx 2 capsules) has greatly contributed to my continuing good health and strong immune system going into my senior years.

I have a question: does this product contain quercetin?
    thank you`

    • Dr. Sears Zone Customer Support

Kristin, Thank you for your question. The MaquiRx product does not contain quercetin. Thank You, Dr. Sears Zone

Isn’t there a conflict of interest by a doctor recommending a diet or treatment and then manufacturing and selling the products that will accomplish these results?

  7. Paul

I take one Maqui in the morning and one before dinner. I use to wake up to urinate nightly before I started taking Maqui Rx. Now, I sleep through the night, and it’s been years since. Dr. Sears is absolutely right when he says the Maqui Rx helps to stabilize your blood sugar. I do believe without taking Maqui, I may have developed insulin resistance. I am a forever user!

  8. Edward A. Nardell

I am a semi-retired physician, an enthusiast for the Sears approach since the 90s when my wife was diagnosed with cancer and we both adopted it – seeing our LDL and TG levels plummet! I have followed every added nuance from anti-inflammatory fish oil and now polyphenols to repair inflammation. I have been convinced by the solid scientific arguments. My question is this. Even at the subscription price of $40 for 30 MaquiRx 120 mg capsules, that is still $1.33 each, and at a recommended anti-inflammatory dose of 1000 mg, that is about 8 capsules at $10.66 per day, not to mention 4 fish oil capsules/day baseline ($45/month). Does the 1000 mg polyphenol dose assume no other dietary source? Otherwise, the recommendation may be beyond the means of many patients. A couple could spend $640/month just on polyphenols! Add another $90/month for fish oil for two, and that is $730/month for a couple trying to stay healthy. There has to be another way to get these benefits at a more affordable cost.

    • Dr. Sears Zone

Dr. Nardell, Thanks so much for your comment and we appreciate your dedication to the Zone! Dr. Sears believes that the more closely you follow the Zone Diet the less products you have to rely on. It is a bit harder to get the appropriate amount of omega3s through consumption of fish alone, but when it comes to polyphenols if you like fruits and vegetables it’s easier. Dr. Sears recommends aiming for a minimum of 1,000mg of polyphenols per day for general wellness which can come from a combination of food and supplementation. To give a sense of what 1,000mg looks like using food, this could be approximately 5 ½ cups of broccoli, 1 ½ cups of blueberries, 2 ¼ cups of strawberries or a combination of various fruits and vegetables. A good rule of thumb is that consuming 10 servings of vegetables and fruits per day will provide about 1,000mg of polyphenols. Dr. Sears states maqui is the best of the best in terms of polyphenols because it is rich in delphinidins which have been shown to have numerous health benefits. Berries, especially blueberries, are rich in this same group of polyphenols so if you can try and make the majority of your fruit intake from berries it will greatly help to ensure you are getting delphinidins in the diet. This will also help curb how much you need to rely on supplementation. Even though berries contain the least amount of sugar among fruits you do want to ensure that when you consume them or any fruit that it is balanced with protein to help minimize any glycemic spikes. Thank You, Dr. Sears Zone

  9. Douglas C Brown

I have trusted and used Dr. Sears Zone products auto-ship since 2002. Great value and very helpful staff for phone orders. I especially recommend the yearly AA/EPA ratio test to confirm the Omega Rx2 dosage. I have kept mine below 2 for many years. Thanks, Dr. Sears.

  10. Soniachritton

    appreciate all the research!

  11. Alberto Fernandez

Been on the Zone since the 90’s when Dr. Sears was not selling any products to be in the Zone. I am living proof and a believer of Dr. Sears. I am slim, healthy (zero meds) and strong.
Now I try to take it one step higher with Polyphenols but the MaquiRX label suggests one capsule per day and in other literature Dr. Sears mentions 4 capsules per day. That is a big difference and cost.
    Please explain.

    • Dr. Sears’ Zone

Alberto, Thank you for your comment/question and for being a long time Zoner. With the MaquiRx, 1 capsule contains 300mg of the maqui berry extract Delphinol and provides 120mg of total polyphenols. Dr. Sears does suggest that a person should get at least 1000mg of polyphenols per day with much of your daily intake coming from dietary sources of fruits and vegetables. If a person is looking to get a higher percentage of their polyphenols in the form of delphinidins from the maqui berry or if they are not eating their daily supply of fruits and vegetables it can be beneficial to take additional MaquiRx capsules. Thank You, Dr. Sears’ Zone

After taking these I feel absolutely no improvement in my health. This is basically blueberry flavoured chalk.

I believe it makes me feel better.

  15. Ruth Hernández

Hello I’m a Doctor OBGYN and I prescribe Zone maqui, my patients came with another brand, and my question is would it work the same way? The brand is BIOVEA maqui berry 500mg.

    • Dr. Sears’ Zone Customer Support

Thank you for your question Dr. Hernandez. We have reviewed the Biovea product and while it does contain maqui berry there is one aspect of the product that is quite different than the MaquiRx. According to the label, the Biovea product contains 500mg of “whole fruit” from the maqui berry while Dr. Sears’ MaquiRx is a maqui berry extract containing 300mg of the highly purified delphinidin extract. Delphinidins are a special class of polyphenols that have unique anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties that work by activating the key enzyme AMP kinase that controls our metabolism, increases chemical energy production, and provides anti-aging benefits. As far as how much of the delphinidins are in the Biovea product, that would be difficult to say since they do not share that information in the product information or supplement facts. Thank You, Dr. Sears’ Zone

What are Polyphenols?

Polyphenols are the chemicals that give vegetables and fruits their colors. They also represent the plant’s primary defense mechanism against invading bacteria and other parasites. Their intake is important in controlling the bacteria composition of our digestive system.

What do Polyphenols do for you?

It is becoming recognized that polyphenols are essential nutrients for humans. They are powerful anti-oxidants, have anti-inflammatory effects, and activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that controls our metabolism, increases chemical energy production, and slows down the aging process. Equally important, you need adequate levels of polyphenols to maintain the appropriate balance of bacteria in your gut that is key to maintaining long-term health. If that balance is disturbed by a lack of polyphenols in your diet, the result will be increased cellular inflammation throughout your body.

How many Polyphenols do you need?

From an anti-oxidant potential you need to ingest enough fruits and vegetables to provide a minimum of 3,000-5,000 Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC) units per day. Unfortunately, to reach the minimum 3,000-5,000 ORAC units requires approximately 10 servings of normally consumed fruits and vegetables per day. Dr. Sears recommends at least 10,000 ORAC units per day for optimal anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. To reach the recommended levels of 10,000 ORAC units per day, it does require additional polyphenol supplementation for most people. The good news it that one capsule of any of our polyphenol products will provide an additional 8,000 ORAC units.

Are all Polyphenols the same?

No. There are about 4,000 known polyphenols. All have some anti-oxidative properties, but relatively few are anti-inflammatory, and even fewer have anti-aging benefits. Furthermore, you need highly purified polyphenol extracts like those used in Zone Polyphenols to get the full potential of their anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties.

Why are Zone Polyphenols different than others on the market?

To get the full potential of the anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties of polyphenols, you have to use highly purified extracts. They are more expensive than typical concentrates because of the extra processing, but without such purification you are unlikely see any of their potential benefits.

Why are Delphinidins "the Best of the Best"?

Delphinidins are the only polyphenols that are common to red wine, dark chocolate, and blueberries. Delphinidins have a unique structure compared to all other polyphenols that allows them to provide unique anti-inflammatory and anti-aging benefits. The richest source of delphinidins is the maqui berry found only in the Patagonian region of Chile. One capsule of Maqui Rx contains the highly purified polyphenol extract of the maqui berry and has the same amount of delphinidins as found in 100 bottles of red wine, 20 bars of dark chocolate, or 5 pounds of blueberries.
