Baking breakthrough creates Zone comfort foods

By Dave Schreck

The back cover of Dr. Sears' 1995 NY Times bestseller 'The Zone' states 'BASTA (enough) WITH THE PASTA!' WARNING: EATING THESE CARBOHYDRATES COULD BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH: bananas, apple juice, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and many more.

Most people responded by saying, 'How can we live without these staples in our diet?'

However, those who followed Dr. Sears' advice lost weight and experienced better health. At an annual conference on diabetes one of the speakers, a diabetic specialist, mentioned that the most difficult foods for a diabetic to give up are breads and pasta. Since Dr. Sears realized that changing one's diet is more difficult than changing one's religion, he decided to develop a revolutionary approach to curbing hunger while enjoying the foods we actually like to eat.

His new Zone baked foods are the first breakthrough in baking in more than 400 years.

Typical grain-based foods are very carbohydrate dense, rapidly raising blood sugars and insulin levels. They are referred to as high-glycemic foods. After years of research Dr. Sears has removed some of the carbohydrate and added in a high-quality sustainable protein to create a low-glycemic-index product. This provides greater satiety than any perfectly prepared home-cooked Zone meal through controlled release of protein and carbohydrate, which slows down digestion and signals your brain to stop eating. The Zone pasta dishes are a new way to control your blood sugar and to curb your hunger while enjoying the foods you like. Eating Zone pasta is an easy way to stay in the Zone. To enhance these foods, Dr. Sears encourages everyone to be creative, adding their own personal culinary touch with spices and vegetables. Here are a few suggestions and recipes developed by our Zone staff with Basic: and advanced ideas.
