Everyone was skeptical when our intrepid food detective, Sherlock Zone, said he could construct good Zone meals at a restaurant called Romano’s Macaroni Grill. Macaroni? That’s not allowed in the Zone.
Once he arrived at the grill, Sherlock had to admit it wasn’t the easiest restaurant he had investigated, but after a few brilliant deductions, he was able to find some good Zone offerings to make sure diners aren’t left clueless.
He glanced at the list of antipasti but found most of the offerings were fried or breaded.
There were the usual salad offerings. He just urges diners to stick with vinaigrette for a dressing. The mozzarella alla caprese (imported buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and balsamic vinaigrette) is also always a good choice. At Macaroni’s the caprese comes in two sizes.
He quickly passed the soups and pizzas and was about to dismiss the pasta dishes when he saw something very interesting.
Right in the middle of all those insulin-raising treats, he found “Create Your Own Pasta.” The basic dish is $8.99.
Diners first choose a sauce. Tomato basil, garlic olive oil, meat sauce and pesto are good choices.
Then diners may choose three “Add Some Yummy,” including diced tomatoes, broccoli, asparagus, artichokes, mushrooms and spinach.
Next are the extras, meaning they cost extra. Grilled eggplant and roasted peppers cost $1. For $2, diners can choose grilled chicken or buffalo mozzarella. Shrimp costs $3, and Pescatora, a combination of bay scallops, shrimp and lump crabmeat, costs $6.
The entrée, of course, comes with a choice of pasta, which Sherlock rejected. Many times servers will allow the substitution of extra vegetables.
So what did Sherlock choose for his Zone meal? Grilled chicken, grilled eggplant and roasted peppers, broccoli and artichokes, topped with a tomato basil sauce and served over a bed of spinach.
For diners with a taste for fish, “Simple Salmon” is grilled and served with grilled asparagus and broccoli.
So they might call it Macaroni, but Sherlock Zone was able to get creative and find a good Zone meal at Romano’s Macaroni Bar and Grill.
