On holiday in Florida, Sherlock Zone decided to get into the spirit of the balmy weather by dining out at Bahama Breeze, a restaurant with locations scattered throughout the United States. For those of you who haven’t been introduced to Sherlock, he’s our food detective who helps Zoners with menus that leave them clueless.
Although the appetizers were all heavy on the bread side, several soups and entrees were in the Zone.
Cuban Black Bean Soup helped boost favorable carbs, but Sherlock had it served without the rice. Besides the usual salads, the Sun-Ripened Tomato Salad is worth a try, featuring red grape, yellow pear and beefsteak tomatoes, seasoned with citrus cilantro vinaigrette. There are also entrée salads. Two that are in the Zone are Bahamian Grilled Chicken on Greens with mushrooms, onions, peppers and squash; and Fresh Ahi Tuna Salad with sweet peppers, cucumber slaw and tomatoes. Pass on the tortilla strips.
There are many entrees from which to choose. Since he was dining on Caribbean cooking, he inquired about the Jerk Painted Fresh Fish. His waiter told him that jerk ingredients are Scotch bonnet peppers, allspice, thyme and scallions. The meat is marinated and then slowly grilled. Adding wood chips to the fire enhances the flavor.
Entrees to his liking include Almond Crusted Fresh Fish, Fresh Fish Havana (sautéed with caper-garlic tomato sauce), Pan-seared Fresh Fish, and Fresh Ahi Tuna. For those who don’t like fish, chicken is also on the menu, including Margarita Chicken, Breeze Wood Grilled Chicken Breast, Barbecue Chicken Breast (topped with applewood bacon and melted cheese), Bahamian Grilled Chicken Kabobs (with mushrooms, onions, peppers and squash), Jamaican Grilled Chicken Breast, and Chicken Santiago, with garlic and thyme, served with a roasted red pepper sauce, fresh tomato salsa and crispy yucca.
Of course, skip the rice or potatoes that come with the entrées and ask for extra of the featured vegetables instead.
It was soon back to winter for Sherlock, but he certainly did enjoy those balmy Bahama breezes.
