Sherlock visits Ruby Tuesday

Sherlock Zone, our roving sleuth who investigates menus at restaurants every month for Zone-favorable entrees, feared he might be out of the job. This “sudden” low-carb. craze has prompted many restaurants to add low-carb offerings to their selections. Sherlock was told he has nothing to fear. All true Zoners know that the Zone Diet is not a low-carb diet, but one based on balance and moderation.

He headed out to Ruby Tuesday, a chain of restaurants located in all but 10 states, and sure enough the menu offers 40-plus low-carb. dishes and endless salad bar combinations.

Low-carb. fajitas are offered. They come without rice and beans and feature “low-carb.”, whole-grain tortillas. Ask how many grams of carbohydrate are in each tortilla before you start chowing them down. Better still, have one tortilla and order a bowl of white chicken chili. Sandwiches are also served with low-carb. wraps.

One nice feature is the menu offers mashed cauliflower as an alternative to mashed potatoes. (That’s a recipe smart Zoners have been using for years.)

Several salads are offered, as low-carb. choices, including Spring Chicken Salad, served with a spring mix, almonds, tomatoes, bacon and blue cheese (tell them to skip the bacon and serve the dressing on the side);

Cajun Chicken Salad with tomatoes, cheese and roasted almonds (again, have the Ranch dressing served on the side or ask for olive oil and vinegar); and Peppercorn Chicken Caesar with toasted pecans, tomatoes, cheese and mustard dressing (croutons are served on the side).

Entrees Chopped Steak, Grilled Cajun Chicken, Broiled Tilapio and Church Street Chicken are served with both steamed broccoli and mashed cauliflower.

So Sherlock reminds you again that Zoners have to remember that the Zone isn’t a low-carbohydrate diet. It’s a moderate-carbohydrate diet. When dining out, make sure you are getting enough carbs. (Adding some fruit or veggies from the salad bar will do the trick). The Zone also isn’t a high-fat diet. It’s a moderate-fat diet. Make sure you don’t add too much fat.
