Sherlock dines at Cracker Barrel

What is in the Zone at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store? That’s what a reader of the OmegaZone e-magazine wants to know. Well, certainly not the crackers. We sent Sherlock Zone to the restaurant, which has locations all over the place. For those of you who do not know, Sherlock goes to restaurants that have menus that leave Zoners clueless about what to order.

The Homemade Chicken Salad has promise. It consists of homemade white meat chicken salad served over fresh greens with fresh cantaloupe, Colby cheese wedge, boiled egg halves and wedged tomato. Sounds like a hearty salad. Cracker Barrel also serves similar salads with turkey and chicken.

A great many of the entries on the menu are fried, which is a shame. But Sherlock noted that the Spicy Grilled Catfish Dinner, Grilled Pork Chops and Country Ham Steak Dinner would pass inspection. Just make sure to keep your protein allotment to the size of the palm of your hand. Each meal comes with two sides of country cooked vegetables. Choices include country green beans, turnip greens, cole slaw and “vegetable of the day.”

Make sure to stay away from the mashed potatoes, homemade buttermilk biscuits and corn bread.

While Sherlock said the menu at Cracker Barrel is limited for Zoners, clues to a balanced meal can be found there. If your favorite restaurant leaves you clueless, let us know, and we’ll put Sherlock Zone on the case.
