Sherlock Zone steps out to Capital Grille

Sherlock Zone was in the mood for celebration and decided to have a night out at Capital Grille, a nationwide chain of upscale restaurants. It’s a bit pricey, but for a special occasion, it’s a good choice.


Sherlock, who for years has been giving Zoners all the clues needed for dining out, found quite a few appetizers that were directly in the Zone, including: Wagyu Beef Carpaccio, premium Japanese Wagyu beef blended with seven spices, seared, chilled, and sliced razor thin and garnished with fresh arugula; Cold Shellfish Platter, one-pound baby lobster, icy Gulf Coast jumbo shrimp and freshly shucked oysters (order for the whole table); Smoked Salmon, cold-smoked in Maine with accents of capers, dill mayonnaise and zesty onion pita crisps (go easy on the mayo and crisps); and Shrimp cocktail, served with a house-made cocktail sauce with kick.


A member of Sherlock’s party had the Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil Salad, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and 12-year aged balsamic vinegar. All the green salads look tempting, but ask for a substitution for the bacon dressing on the spinach salad.


Although steak is not a staple on the Zone Diet, for a very special occasion once in a Blue Moon, it is acceptable, and if you are going to have steak, the Capital Grille is the place to have it. Just make sure to watch portion sizes: Three ounces for the typical woman and four ounces for the typical man. Bring the rest home to make a meal (or two) the next day.


For those who don’t want steak, there are many other choices: Roasted Chicken with a blend of spices, slow roasted to seal in moistness; Broiled Fresh Lobster (choose the smallest); Grilled Swordfish with lemon, fennel and herbs; and Sushi-Grade Sesame Seared Tuna with Ginger. Say no to the rice. The salmon on the menu is seared and brushed with citrus honey glaze, so tell your server to make it without the glaze. It is served with a vegetable medley.


Other favorable sides include fresh asparagus, creamed spinach, roasted mushrooms and seasonal fresh vegetables.


So our intrepid food detective had a great night out at Capital Grille. What was the special occasion? Sherlock won’t give us a clue.
